Feel the Day

As adults, we can get so into our routines and take ourselves so seriously that we don’t feel our days. Often, we go through an entire drive to work and don’t remember it because we are thinking of work. Then, in your work day, you are on the go all day. On the drive home, you feel fatigue and don’t really pay attention to your drive home. Once at home, you breath a little, but it isn’t a picturesque scene when you are cooking, cleaning, and taking care of things that were left undone from the previous day. Then, the weekend comes and you feel hopeful for a break of the routine. More often than not, you end up spending your weekend without intention and you don’t really know how you squandered your minutes.

This pattern can go on for long periods during a busy season and before you know it weeks or months have gone by. You long for the day when you get a break in the rat race. Maybe you are dreaming of that upcoming vacation or special event just to give you some sense of aliveness. Sound familiar?

During your busy work day and more easily on the weekends, we have to feel the day. It takes a few intentional minutes. Think about your big dream that you have on the horizon or even that upcoming trip or event, but do it more often. Take 3 or 4 deep breaths, close your eyes, and connect with the event. Picture yourself in the moment, living the experience. Picture the soft breeze and the smells. Then imagine your intentions of the event: are you going to connect more with your family, shower your spouse with love, or even thrive in moments of solitude and aliveness? Connect to this mental image and feel it in your emotions. Stir up something inside of you that is buried in your busy lives and do it with intention. This will help you enjoy the journey to the event and, as a by product, will help you to feel the day.

Try using a mindfulness trigger throughout your day. Example: before you reply to an email or text, take a few deep breaths and connect to your self at a deeper level.

Life is meant to be felt and not just at the destination but during the journey as well.
