Practice Gratitude

This morning started as an atypical day. For some reason, I was bothered by everything while being out in the world. I had people driving really slow or riding on my bumper. While at the store, I had people clogging up the aisles. While at the gym, my 30 lb dumbbells were missing in action. Basically, I had been throwing a fit due to my sense of entitlement.

I think we all live by some amount of comparison and that is what I was doing today. Except, I was comparing my privileged life to my current circumstances instead of comparing my circumstances to something more humbling.

Try these for humbling:

  • We are all spinning on a ball in the middle of infinite space.
  • There are people that have it so much worse than us being inconvenienced.
  • Some people will never have a chance to read these words because they don’t have basic necessities in life.
  • And, if you are reading this, you still have breath in your lungs.

In order to get through my lower level feelings and impulses today, I first noticed that these feelings were happening (really important) and I consciously sought to change my attitude by taking deep breaths. I also stopped my furious activity and just slowed down to really understand the feelings that I wanted to feel instead of dealing with frustration.

Changing your attitude can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths. That isn’t much of an ask since your energy effects everyone around you. Today I choose to be peaceful since that is what I want to spread to the world.
